Sore shoulders but still smiling

9 10 2009

My personal short story about today includes waking up at seven AM, carrying a lot of heavy equipment, setting up lights, camera and mics and recording two interviews within three hours… I’m not sure which was worse: actually doing it or all the worrying that came prior to it. I definitely think the worrying was more stressful than anything else.

So now, my shoulders are killing me but the final projects looked pretty good, if I may say so. Unfortunately, I am about to go off and start my second film shoot for the day. I’m director of this next one and face a lot more responsibilities.

The reason I am telling you all this is because although I may bitch and moan about being busy, carrying heavy equipment, waking up early, cancelling plans with friends and dealing with the stress of production, I still love what I’m doing. I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t. In between recording and packing up at the end of the shoot, there is this strong, overwhelming sense of accomplishment and pride. A “You did it!!!” sort of feeling…and let me tell you, it feels amazing.

This said, what do YOU want to do in tv and film production? For those of you who want a job in the business after graduation, it is important to know exactly what you want to do. Do you want to do film and make movies in LA or would you rather work on television shows in a studio in New York City? There are many routes you can take…TV, film, advertising, critiquing, promotion and also positions such as editing, camera, gaffer, director, producer, audio, wardrobe, makeup, casting…

What helped me decide that I love film over everything else was I thought about what I watch more of, first off. I watch a ton of movies but I only really watch a couple TV shows on a regular basis. My favorite shows are One Tree Hill, Friends, Seinfield and King of Queens. Therefore, I know if I pursue a career in TV, it would be more of sitcoms and one-hour series type shows.

Second, my internship made me realize how much I loved going to work everyday to edit and talk about making films.

So keep all of that in mind and go on a little soul-searching adventure, if you haven’t already, to figure out what you are the most passionate about! Once you know that, you will be on your way to making your dreams come true.
